Presidents have far more individual discretionary power, management authority, foreign & national security responsibility than legislators. 4-yr term vs 2-yrs for House/SEN leaders. Both have a sell-by date, but an aged POTUS is a more dramatic problem.

Reagan also had cognitive decline in his second term.
-
He was slowing down by the end. He was, however, extraordinarily effective in his last year+ in office.

What would you think of a maximum age for office, just like the minimums that we currently have?

Might be time to consider a "80 is enough" mandatory retirement age for Congress, White House, and the Supreme Court. Have it go into effect 10 years after ratification.

The risk of sudden disability/death rises dramatically after 65, but statistics on age and health are largely based on data from the Greatest Generation who experienced severe depravations during the Depression and WW2. Boomers & beyond are healthier and have better health care.
-
I think the greatest risk with a 70+ presidency is a cognitively disabled president who is a figurehead, with real policy decisions, etc., being made by people behind the scenes. See Woodrow/Edith Wilson for an example.

Watching Sen. Leahy preside over the impeachment trial made me feel like there should be an upper age limit. But I'd still take him over a Sen. Hawley every single time.
-
I thought Leahy was too old & slow for his job when I watched the Clarence Thomas hearings, and that was 30 years ago.
