McConnell's been in elected office since 1977, is 7-for-7 in statewide races, has won 4 of his last 5 by double digits going back to 1996, despite the media loathing him. He beat a strong primary challenger in 2014. He had a Senate majority before Trump, which Trump cost him.https://twitter.com/BlueBoxDave/status/1362156637436452872 …

It’s irrelevant. McConnell speaks for power and special interests. Republican voters are over that. We’re not dumb rubes who need Mitch and the chamber of commerce to lead us. That’s over. And if we lose we lose.

The only way to ensure you are never at odds with your voters is to have a lot fewer of them. There are lots of things that don't generate 100% agreement among people who vote for Republicans.

There's a hell of a lot of people in Republican politics & conservative media who need to lose their jobs if that's the standard. I mean, has the country moved to the left since The Federalist started publishing? Was Rush Limbaugh a failure by this standard?

Because he genuinely believed they were a bad idea. Or enough of the caucus did. Trump did it just to hurt his own voters.
