Nobody who studied Jefferson Davis' relationship with Winfield Scott while Davis was Secretary of War would ever have wanted Davis as Commander in Chief of an army waging an existential struggle requiring the cooperative effort of its generals.

As it turned out, the generals that Davis had to manage as Confederate president were...not easy personalities. He needed great skill to handle them. Instead, he was indecisive, prickly, stubborn, & bad at soothing their egos.
