Scott was vain & petty in his own right, plus embittered at serving an Administration that had just defeated him for president, but Davis took every opportunity to quarrel & insult Scott's considerable pride over mostly trivial & symbolic matters.

The Scott-Davis feud was a pre-existing one from Davis being a Zachary Taylor man during the Mexican War, although Taylor had also grown to despise his former son-in-law during Taylor's presidency.

As with George McClellan, it's nearly impossible to find even superficially sympathetic historians who paint a picture of Jefferson Davis' character as a leader that isn't damning. Character matters. Some men just aren't cut out for it, especially at the highest levels.

As it turned out, the generals that Davis had to manage as Confederate president were...not easy personalities. He needed great skill to handle them. Instead, he was indecisive, prickly, stubborn, & bad at soothing their egos.
