So the lesson is when big issues are on the line to not expect leaders to do the right thing? That’s more cynical than my despair.
The lesson, sadly, is that leaders do not lead when they are not in positions of leadership; if they try, they don't get to be leaders.
For Reagan you don't even have to go back that far. I'm old enough to remember how many conservatives were deeply disappointed by his second term. Read some circa 1987 National Reviews and see how much "Let Reagan be Reagan" there was.
