You can't build a third party around being against one guy, especially when he's not in office or on a ticket.

Or put serious resources behind non-partisan elections (no party labels on ballots).

The country would be infinitely better off if Republicans were locked out of being a majority or holding the WH for a couple decades. Yes... this would mean Dems winning elections for a while. But that would be preferable to the current GOP, as constituted, winning them.

It won’t work in the short term. In the medium term, it could replace the GOP. The GOP originated from an 1854 meeting and elected Lincoln in 1860. To pull that off again, these breakaway folks would have to crush the GOP on fundraising and attract better candidates.

That sounds crazy until you realize that incumbents might play. Business might prefer to be affiliated with 5-6 moderate GOP senators who legislate + Manchin (who really needs an offramp by 2024), plus whoever they can get elected. What is the GOP doing after tax cuts + judges?

Takes two to tango. The right-wing is saying “we are running people like Trump and you are forced to go along with it otherwise Dems are in charge.” And the center right is saying “No we aren’t, and you need to change or else Dems are in charge.” Credible threat.
