Yes, and if there had been something preceding that shooting that was more like the 2-month campaign of word & deed that led up to Jan 6, I'd have been willing to abandon my usual presumption that we don't hold politicians responsible for violence by their followers.

One, it's not my standard, it's the Framers'. They deliberately left "High Crimes and Misdemeanors" open-ended outside of treason & bribery to account for the variety of betrayals of the duties of statesmanship possible among public men.

The protections against overreaching that standard are political & structural, not legal. And the reason Trump's case is a unique course of conduct is his behavior, not the law. He committed a unique, sustained assault on American democracy, resulting in unique consequences.
