The size of government & the scope of individual liberty are things that should concern any conservative.

Nope. Still progressive propaganda. Look at the actual government he supported. It bears not the slightest resemblance to an enormous administrative state with cradle-to-grave welfare, a thicket of mandates, etc. And slavery itself required a big, intrusive government.

Jefferson Davis' wartime government was https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/07/the-confederate-roots-of-the-administrative-state/ … So were Marx & other radicals who were mostly out of power. So were totalitarians like Francisco Solano Lopez. The real shift, though, starts with Bismarck.

Sumner was less of a pure small-government classical liberal than others in the party, and less of a fusionist with the early GOP's more traditional conservatives than, say, Lincoln. But retconning him into a prog is just willful parroting of left-wing propaganda.

In the sense of having ideas the progs reject root & branch. Sorry, go sell Kevin Kruse's nonsense elsewhere.

Skepticism of Christianity, a predilection toward scientism, a denial of traditional moral suppositions... that’s not Kruse, that’s Paine and Jefferson.

Paine actually was a precursor of today's Left. Jefferson was rather more complicated, given his tendency to be on multiple sides of so many questions. I do think Jefferson would be a Democrat if he was alive today.

Yes, and Paine is widely regarded as a “classical liberal.” Progressivism is just classical liberalism with more government force.

Paine was much more than that. He was carried away by the illiberal French Revolution.
