Gilmore and Bush didn't get very far in '16, although both seemed to have accomplished much in their respective states. Ditto for Pataki.

It was a tough cycle for the GOVs - Jeb, Christie, Kasich, Walker, Jindal, Perry, Huckabee, Pataki, Gilmore. But several of those were long out of office, & the field was too crowded.

Senators have gotten a ton of attention for better or for worse the last 6 years or so, so they are now more open to attacks on votes and cable news issues. Governors now are more "hidden" in the sense that they don't garner a ton of negative attention except for egregious errors

I've always preferred gubernatorial experience in a POTUS. We should get our presidents by sending the governors into conclave, to choose a winner from amongst themselves, while the rest of us wait for the white smoke to pour from the chimney.
