Yeah. I might have been unclear but I meant the policies they were championing during their campaigns. It was also a very tough political climate in 2008 but McCain did nothing to help.

I'd argue that McCain did quite respectably losing by only a hair over 7%. He had the personal brand to lessen the damage W's unpopularity had inflicted upon the party.

Not precisely, but I agree that McCain was not identified with the conservative wing of the party at any point after 1988 or so.

If Romney had been the nominee in 2008 he would have won. Would never have suspended his campaign like McCain did. Would have been the perfect man for the job as the market tanked in 08.
