Honest question though- whose call is it? Assuming the constitution doesn’t call on him to preside, is it up to him to say anything at all? Seems like the court likes to stay out of any areas in which they have no authority. Or is this different because it’s such a close call?

That’s exactly why he couldn’t put it “on the record.” He has no judicial power, as a single justice, to set “historic precedent” on a legal question
-
If the trial is defective because he didn’t preside, that’s a legal question to be decided ultimately by the Supreme Court, not by Roberts, and only as part of a “case or controversy” giving the courts jurisdiction.

He has no such duty, unless POTUS is on trial.

It's pretty clear that if Roberts is not required to preside, the Senate doesn't have jurisdiction over Trump to conduct the Trial.
