Bush was good at some things, as a politician. So was Trump. McCain, HW Bush, & Romney were good at fewer things, especially Romney. Dole was terrible. We haven't had a national nominee who was really good at this across the board since Reagan.

Dole was a terrible POTUS candidate, not much of a VP candidate, either. His one virtue in 1996 was that he worked tirelessly & selflessly to save the GOP Congress long after it was clear he was gonna lose his own race.https://twitter.com/henrytatkinson/status/1353887876824657921 …

Actually, Bob Dole was pretty good as Senate Republican Leader. He also made the 1988 primaries a lot closer than they should have been. But 1996 did not go well.

Cotton is slowly but surely building that resume. Haley may be, as well.

Cotton is a good Senator. Haley is a better politician. I could live with either, prefer Haley, but not wedded to her as the candidate.

Bush 41 was much better at being President and behind closed doors with people than he was on TV and other multimedia.

Then why does the message win at all lower levels in more than half the states, and even more so in years that aren't presidential elections?

Fiorina had potential but too much of the modern GOP’s primary base was too susceptible to click bait politics during the 2016 election. That’s only intensified.
