The only defense is that he doesn’t think a “former” president is impeachable, but he may have to actually rule on that (in the near future to boot) and an explanation as to why he’s not presiding here would amount to prejudging that question on an actual case or controversy.

It's almost like this is an unserious, and quite unconstitutional, abuse of power that the Chief doesn't want to be associated with in any manner whatsoever. Not even so much as with a comment on your little partisan concerns.
