I would still have been against mob action, but this is a serious question - and indeed, a major part of my argument why it was so dangerous for Trump to make claims that, if true & sincerely believed, could reasonably *justify* sacking the Capitol.https://twitter.com/Patterico/status/1353739186591862797 …

A different but related question: if Congress had voted to deliver the election to Trump — meaning many of us would have (correctly) believed the election stolen — would we have supported a mob descending on DC to reverse it? What other option would we have had?

If you convince a man that there is an armed rapist-murderer in his bathroom & he goes downstairs & shoots the plumber because he believed you, do you bear no moral responsibility for that?

Yes, if Trump was right, then the mob was John Brown at Harpers Ferry. They were righteous. Or, at least, Athens, TN (you surely know the reference, but relatively few will):https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Athens_(1946) …

Yep. There is a serious moral argument for & against John Brown's raid. Ditto Athens (still mean to read Chris DeRose's new book on that). If every word of Trump's 1/6 speech was the truth, you could make that same case.

Yes, I agree with that. It would still be doomed (as Harpers Ferry was) because of a lack of armed might—so the state crushed it—, but sure: if a massive plot involving countless election officials, state politicians, and state and federal judges to steal the election....

As I noted before, Comet Pizza guy legit believed when he showed up with a gun there that he was saving children. Really sad. And FWIW, I have always considered the John Brown raid justified, but also sets a really high bar for when such mob action is justified.
