Agreed. But real solutions needs to be offered. Where the populist right isn't incoherent they're openly calling for government regulation of speech they dislike.

The abuse of the term "cancel culture" has done more harm to the cause. Consumer boycott is not cancel culture. It's the capitalist flip side of advertising. Cancel culture is the loss of a job or opportunity for a lawful but controversial position.

Your second paragraph is just a company or group of people exercising their first amendment right to not associate with someone. If they are doing it because they think that someone said something awful, that’s no different than a boycott. Only difference is the scale.
