    1. Rewatched the last Harry Potter film with the youngest & was reminded how the filmmakers - having done a fine job with the rest of Book 7 - royally screwed up the climactic fight between Harry & Voldemort.

        2. The key point of that fight is that Harry, in full view of the crowd, no longer fears Voldemort. He knows he can't be harmed by him anymore. And displaying that for all to see is what shakes Voldemort & inspires others.

        3. That, and Neville taking out the snake in one swoop, also in full view of the combatants.

        4. One of the core tropes of fantasy is that good defeats evil not because it is strong, but because it is good. The setting of the final duel in the book elevates that; the film leaches it away.

The fight is supposed to be anticlimactic demythology. Harry knew he had it won. He was just giving Voldemort a chance to find his humanity. But the movie made it into a silly flying battle away from the crowd.

So many shots in that scene were only done to look good in 3D.... and now just seem pointless.

I don't mind it. Harry's journey in the movies is more about recognizing that it isn't just his battle. Hermione & Ron sticking by him, the defense of Hogwarts to buy Harry time, Neville stepping forward before he knows Harry still lives, it's about heroes being everywhere.

“Fine” job with the rest of the book, but None of it could even come close to comparing.

Last good scene in Deathly Hallows 2 is Neville appearing to give up & defect only for him to defy Voldemort face to face in front of everybody when all seems lost.

Also, another good example of how film directors let slo-mo (or the long drawn-out aesthetic of slo-mo) ruins a scene. In the book, the logic behind who is the master of the Elder Wand builds the scene to a climax & the duel puts a shocking cap to the logic in its sudden finality
