Sean is satisfied with the legislative record of the past four years & the outcomes of the 2018 & 2020 elections. I am not. So much more could have been done. So much was wasted by Trump, his failures of character & leadership, & his totally unnecessary personal obsessions. https://twitter.com/seanmdav/status/1352266262626390018 …

As for the ad hominem, Sean has known me well enough for long enough to be quite aware that he is mischaracterizing me. I, however, have remained consistent over the past five years & not mass-purged things I previously wrote in an effort to conceal inconvenient prior takes.

Yes, much was accomplished in 4 years, & Rs did better than many of the doomsday scenarios envisioned, in 2016, 2018 & 2020. None of that, however, changes the sheer volume of unforced errors by Trump & how those accumulated to little passed in Congress & unified D control.

The lesson going forward should be that Rs choose a leader dedicated to unifying the Right & isolating the Left, focused on advancing the cause & the party rather than his own ego & interests, & prepared to advance on many fronts from Day One.

Also, the fundamental divide on the Right is over whether we advocates need to do anything besides tell the converted what they want to hear & already believe. Do we already have a governing majority? Do persuadable people exist? Does objective truth exist? Does policy take work?

I believe - and I realize this is controversial on the Right - that the world consists of something besides Right & Left, and that people who enthusiastically prefer Donald Trump are not such a decisive national majority that we need never appeal to anyone else.

This sentence in your piece was unclear: "Most of us did not give up on the pre-Trump ideals of conservatism, which we had defended from the Left for many years before 2015." Are you suggesting, for example, we revert to 41/43's China trade policy? Because that ain't happening.

I'm talking more there about systemic principles & norms of behavior than specific policy stances. On policy, I'd prefer we be more free trade than Trump was. I don't argue that this should mean a complete return on China. But even W was not exactly pure on trade.

Andrew Breitbart showed us how to behave like a wartime consligiere without whacking half of our family in the process.
