Sean is satisfied with the legislative record of the past four years & the outcomes of the 2018 & 2020 elections. I am not. So much more could have been done. So much was wasted by Trump, his failures of character & leadership, & his totally unnecessary personal obsessions. https://twitter.com/seanmdav/status/1352266262626390018 …

Which is not at all my view, and has never been my view. No party can or should ever try to purge large segments of its rank & file.https://twitter.com/OneFineJay/status/1352308528711675918 …

I think the controversy is the idea that the people who enthusiastically preferRED Trump (since he's no longer in any arena for anyone to prefer) deserve to be ignored and cast out. Those people vote. Many voted for Democrats prior.

Trump supporters are not a majority, they are a big minority but some people in the middle voted for Trump simply on policy. Have to redirect those to another GOP candidate.

Didn’t we learn that Trump and something far right doesn’t work? Lost the House, Senate and Presidency. And for all the clamoring about Biden and socialism, he’s more moderate than the others he ran against in primary — I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

By the same token, the GOP can't go back to the party of lip service to cultural conservatives and the working class. Rather, those two constituents need to be first and foremost. Free traders and neocons need to realize they are no longer the party majority.

This sentence in your piece was unclear: "Most of us did not give up on the pre-Trump ideals of conservatism, which we had defended from the Left for many years before 2015." Are you suggesting, for example, we revert to 41/43's China trade policy? Because that ain't happening.

I'm talking more there about systemic principles & norms of behavior than specific policy stances. On policy, I'd prefer we be more free trade than Trump was. I don't argue that this should mean a complete return on China. But even W was not exactly pure on trade.
