It remains appalling to me how much academic scholarship - the entire purpose of which, in theory, is to expand the sum of mankind's collective knowledge - is paywalled, even in the absence of significant market demand.

My wife is an academic who requires a lot of similarly obscure articles and says that 90% of the time if you just email the author they will happily send you their article. They're almost always delighted that anyone is interested.

You can always ask a friend in academia to get you a free copy. Maybe that’s why it’s expensive: it’s a device for getting non-academics to stay in contact with their academic friends.
