We should perhaps eliminate primaries altogether, and just let parties nominate who they want, but runoffs are what keep people with less than majority support from getting elected just because there are multiple candidates on the other side.

Absolutely. An element of randomness gets injected into the race. Perdue would have won in November in almost every state. He would even have won in a ranked choice vote.
