The irony of Robert E. Lee's statute being removed from the Capitol is that it was the state government of Virginia that ordered him off federal property.

The problem of commemorating Virginia political history is that the state's political class has been in a protracted slump since the deaths of John Marshall in 1835 & James Madison in 1836, & shows no prospects of ending that in our lifetimes.
