Depends on which era. Battle of Thermopylae? F no, they were hardcore. Alexander the Great's era? Yeah, they were the paper tiger of the age. 100 years can do a lot to a civilization...look at Britain.

The Spartans also failed to consider that their entire civilization consisted of a few small villages of negligible economic or cultural value and therefore Phillip was probably not losing sleep over bypassing them
