Merrick Garland is 68, he stepped down as the DC Circuit's Chief Judge in February. The guy he replaced on the DC Circuit, Abner Mikva, left to spend 2 years as White House Counsel. Ken Starr left that bench, too. Not everybody wants to stay a judge until he's 80. https://twitter.com/CarlPaulus/status/1338026159448141824 …

Mikva was a politician more than a lawyer, surely enjoyed WH counsel role more than the geeky but dreary DC circuit regulatory work
-
He had been on the court for 15 years and ended up being WH counsel for just over a year. And at age 68 he gave up the best retirement benefits in the government, if not the country.

Star’s moved turned into an American tragedy and Mikva was an old and always (including on the bench) very partisan hack. Garland might be willing to sacrifice for the country. Unfathomable he’d prefer the job. (Though conceivable he’d hate it less than some other judges.)
