I grew up wanting to be a test pilot because of him. I didn’t have the eyesight but ended up with a military career. Forget comic book movies, this is what heroes look like. He was a giant in my boyhood and inspired countless others. God Speed General.

According to wikipedia he was unable to be an astronaut because he didn't have a college degree, but did help train them. If true, it shows the idiocy of our obsession with certification - known talent << piece of paper.

Not quite. There were so many people that wanted to be astronauts after Sputnik that that requirement, and the military requirement, were put in place to reduce the number of applicants they needed to review.
