Since we kept the pardon power while getting rid of the king, I don’t think the fact that the king was above the law says much about the extent of the power granted by the Constitution. We purposely designed a different system.

Although really, we didn’t “keep” the pardon power at all, but gave a pardon power to the president, with limits defined in the Constitution.
