It's only darker than you remember if it's been a very long time since you've seen it. It resonates because Christmas isn't just for people whose lives are going perfectly. It's a redemption story made by people who'd endured Depression & World War; Stewart was suffering PTSD.https://twitter.com/Collider/status/1329122565458161667 …

Uh, yeah, so it turns out that 'It's A Wonderful Life', a movie where a man seriously contemplates suicide, may not be the delightful holiday romp we remember. https://bit.ly/32Ys7Hj  pic.twitter.com/TGKanSneSu

I offer the same objection to this @CaitlinPacific take on Rudolph. It works as a Christmas story *because* it is a dark story with a redemptive ending, just like Wonderful Life and Christmas Carol and the Grinch.https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/12/rankin-bass-rudolph-the-red-nosed-reindeer/616932/ …

Of course, being a dark story that has a redemptive ending are exactly why DIE HARD and THE LAST BOY SCOUT are very much Christmas movies.

The song asks "But do your recall the most famous reindeer of all?" The most inane line ever. If someone knows the other reindeer why wouldn't they know the most famous one? For that reason alone - Rudolph should become reindeer steaks - they happen to be quite delicious.

Agree. But I still think Rudolph should have told Santa and the rest to go screw the selves. But that’s just the Irish Amnesia kicking in.

@CaitlinPacific's piece is fantastic and on the mark insofar as Rudolph is too bleak for its target audience. However, the larger point about Christmas and redemption is sound, and why "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" is the most underrated and most powerful Christmas song.
