Americans will start getting Covid-19 vaccinations literally a week from Friday. I don't think people fully comprehend what an extraordinary scientific achievement this is.https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1332771238771630080 …

This will go down in history as one of science and medical research's greatest achievements. Perhaps the most impressive. I put together a preliminary timeline of some key milestones to show how several years of work were compressed into months. pic.twitter.com/BPcaZwDFkl

Having 1000s of Americans die daily because people won't wear a mask while vaccines are rolled out is our generation's version of having 1000s of soldiers sent to their deaths in WWI after the armistice was signed but before it went into effect. So pointless. So easily avoidable.

Masks are helpful in reducing spread, but color me skeptical that there would be literally thousands fewer daily deaths in the US alone if everybody wore masks (are you counting people who don't wear them inside their homes?)

We will never know for sure, but my best estimate is that if we had universal mask wearing outside the home - as in most of east Asia - from April 1st on, we'd have 80% fewer cases and deaths overall.

There are a *lot* of other differences in how East Asia handles this sort of thing. And frankly, the US was never going to adopt their pervasive surveillance or heavy-handed quarantines, nor could we attempt the kinds of border restrictions possible in Taiwan, ROK, or Japan.

Australia. Germany. Heck, sub-saharan Africa. There are a lot of different national models which have led to 50-90% fewer cases and deaths on a per capita cases relative to the United States.

The debate over what we could do, or could have done, differently is a broad one. It involves a lot of things, some of which are feasible here, some not. (Ask why sub-Saharan Africa has so few nursing home deaths). But all of it goes well beyond just masks.
