It’s one of three or four movies where it’s acceptable for a man to cry during. Stewart makes the sacrifices an adult has to make and the moral is “You are appreciated for all you’ve done.” It’s movie whose moral actually isn’t “Chase your dreams.”

one complaint I had is that there were no consequences for Potter for stealing that money from Uncle Billy and covering it up

No legal consequences, but the contrast of Potter being alone on Christmas Eve, while George is surrounded by his family and friends who have helped him in his time of need, speaks volumes as to who is the truly happy man.
