How popular was George W. Bush with Republicans in October 2004? Pretty damn popular. Or guys who lost - Romney in 2012, even Dole in 1996 drew big crowds.https://twitter.com/HotlineJosh/status/1322953449835810816 …

The winner nickname never seemed to be based on actual winning. I don’t think losing will hurt his popularity at all.
-
Yeah. Trump is a winner to his fans because of his self-referential machismo and screw-you attitude. Sure, it helps to actually win, but they don’t look at things from an outcome-based perspective.

Trumps popularity and legacy will largely depend on whether he wins, loses slightly, or gets blown out. Worst case(very unlikely but still possible): If Trump gets blown out and loses TX,GA,AZ,NC he won’t be remembered well at all
-
Yeah, if Trump loses big he'll just quietly slip away into the night, desperate to minimize the damage he does to the Republican party.
He's going to loudly blame everyone else for his failure and he doesn't care who it hurts. In particular he going to blame Republicans.

And conversely the main reason Rs were so down on him in 2016 is that he was seen as a sure-fire loser!
-
Well, not the only reason, but a major one. Parties follow their leaders if they trust them to win. Period.

Are we still doing the "Trump is just a regular pol" take? I bet he becomes even MORE popular with the Republican base if he loses. The resentment from his supporters will be off the charts and he'll have no qualms shamelessly stirring the pot.
