Several of those movies just don't work at all without Sean Connery. Tremendous screen presence.

Connery was an icon of strong, cool, authoritative masculinity - a man's man, in the old sense of the term. Many of his best screen moments came from his great chemistry with male co-stars: Costner, Harrison Ford, Michael Caine, Sam Neill.

I remember reading Michael Crichton's book Rising Sun, & he introduces one of the lead characters with a description that may as well have said "he will be played by Sean Connery in the movie." Which he was.
