Vote by mail is only one of several options, & not one that has always been around. When I voted absentee (in college), I always mailed by ballot at the earliest opportunity. In any election, you give yourself time if you need it to comply with existing, written rules.https://twitter.com/TheLincoln/status/1322222127525888000 …

Surely a conservative principle should be that voters are not punished for the failures of their government (here an actively sabotaged USPS slowing mail delivery during an election) I mean, if conservatives in 2020 actually had principles... https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1322011819725250561 …

But when you were in college.. was there an active attempt by a sitting president to discredit mail in ballots? Was there an active attempt but he head of the USPS to slow the mail right before an election? Was there a pandemic? The times they have a changed.

"Mail your ballot early and hope that the party in power doesn't intentionally sabotage public infrastructure to such a degree that it effects your franchise" doesn't seem like the best option when "count all votes that are mailed before election day" is also an option.

Under this principle, if I intend to vote in person, but the polling place burns down at noon on election day, Dan says, "Well, you could have voted earlier in the day or absentee or by mail. Your fault actually."

UPS was consistently - boringly! - predictable when you and I were in college, Dan. Today, not so much.

Kind of skirting the question here. Should individual voters be penalized for the failures of government? Especially when those failures could be easily remedied?

This trope of, "I did it easily, so everyone must do it as easily" is quite tired. Example: If you work two jobs (and don't go to college like some elites), and cannot vote absentee, you still have to find a way to get to the polls before or after work. Voting should be easier.

During the primary here in Atlanta someone posted on NextDoor that she couldn’t mail her ballot because the stamps she ordered online hadn’t arrived yet. It was silly then and is so now.

Why is voting "at the earliest opportunity" via absentee OK, but "multiple weeks of early voting" insane, as you've said twice this month?
