At the height of building of the transcontinental railroad, the Chinese crews of the Central Pacific laid ten miles of track in one day. For $40,000 a year plus free message traffic for the govt, the first transcontinental telegraph wire was laid to San Fran in under 4 months.https://twitter.com/Noahpinion/status/1321499007370301441 …

4 miles of bike lane in San Francisco cost a BILLION DOLLARS. Bike lane. These costs are devouring our nation, and no one cares. https://twitter.com/HeadwaysMatter/status/1321483630976344064 …

Nationwide high speed rail wouldn’t cost trillions. It would cost quadrillions.

Land acquisition alone would blow the any reasonable costs unless you managed to reuse an abandoned RofW

Yeah, but they weren't slaves, either. They came here for opportunity (and to escape civil war). Gordon Chang's book Ghosts of Gold Mountain makes a good case that they were generally not forcibly impressed coolies.

And people wonder why state & Federal Govts are so deep in debt. They don’t have money to fix the roads but they have money for things like bike paths.

Also read Stephen Ambrose’s “Nothing Like it in the World “ They did work extremely hard in brutal climates for not a lot of pay. If you go out west and look at the cuts & fills that were dug by hand it’s impossible not to be impressed.
