Yeah, but they weren't slaves, either. They came here for opportunity (and to escape civil war). Gordon Chang's book Ghosts of Gold Mountain makes a good case that they were generally not forcibly impressed coolies.

Also read Stephen Ambrose’s “Nothing Like it in the World “ They did work extremely hard in brutal climates for not a lot of pay. If you go out west and look at the cuts & fills that were dug by hand it’s impossible not to be impressed.
