I don't buy Smoltz's argument that a starting pitcher needs to come out of the game after 6 innings for mental fatigue. Yes, it's tense. But the mental strain was the same 50 or 100 years ago. It's the physical aspect of the game that changed.
Maybe not unchanged, but surely changed a lot less than the physical aspect. Especially when you are talking about protecting a 1 run lead in a decisive World Series game.
