1-Christopher Columbus was sent on his voyage by a government that had just thrown off the last vestiges of seven centuries of foreign rule. Of course, that government's response to retaking their own land also included expelling the country's Jews. History doesn't divide neatly.

4-Columbus' great virtue was his brave, exploring spirit. His great accomplishment was that he led the way to the whole history, not only of the USA, but of all of the Americas - all the good, all the bad. He is more properly judged for his individual sins.

Of course Columbus' actions were extreme enough to be recognized by contemporaries as horrible. He was jailed for 6 weeks for his use of torture on the Hispanola natives - he even put their dismembered remains in the streets to show force. The king eventually released him.
