2-The Spanish of the 15th century could be seen as both oppressed & oppressors; so could some of the New World people they conquered, such as the Aztecs.

3-Understanding the past requires adjusting to a *lot* of ways in which people saw & understood things differently than we do. That doesn't mean we never judge them for doing things that were mistaken or evil. But it asks us not to oversimplify.

4-Columbus' great virtue was his brave, exploring spirit. His great accomplishment was that he led the way to the whole history, not only of the USA, but of all of the Americas - all the good, all the bad. He is more properly judged for his individual sins.

...some of the most desperate members of society (look at Cortez getting in trouble with the local governor before he invaded Mexico). These were not the most civilized members of Spanish society. We probably apply some later impressions of European imperialism into this era

"Seven centuries of foreign rule." Did it ever occur to you that after living in Spain for SEVEN HUNDRED YEARS, they weren't foreigners anymore? If Native Americans kicked every white person out of the country, would you call it "foreign rule"? And we've only been here 400 years!

That is, of course, the entire argument I'm responding to. But clearly, the Spanish in 1492 thought in those terms.
