1896 cartoon of William Jennings Bryan's populism swallowing the Democrats. After 3 straight elections with no popular majority - 1 of those won by GOP while losing popular vote - the Democrats' shift to economic radicalism built Republicans a strong majority coalition.pic.twitter.com/pKyJnlvBV2

McKinley's Republicans (here in blue) lost a lot of lightly-populated Western states - many of them newly admitted 5-7 years earlier for the purpose of electing Republicans - to Bryan, but dominated the Midwest, NY, & NJ, sweeping in the Grover Cleveland voters.pic.twitter.com/95cJeQMZyP

McKinley reclaimed a good deal of the West by 1900. He converted Democratic states such as Delaware, New Jersey, West Virginia, & Utah into solidly Republican for many years.pic.twitter.com/zZf9uvvzpI

Republicans by 1884-95 were an exhausted party: out of ideas, running on muscle memory & scheming to cling to power. McKinley turned that around, built an electoral juggernaut amidst sharply increased turnout. There's a reason Karl Rove was obsessed w/McKinley & guru Mark Hanna.

So long as the basic rules of our 2-party system remain the same, nothing is ever over. Parties evolve, shift, & regroup. The Republicans of the McKinley, Eisenhower, & Reagan eras are all textbook examples of that.

Why are you using an 1892 map to discuss McKinley & Bryan?
