It's not so much that Mike Pence is great or popular by himself, but Pence in the 2016 campaign & the Administration has led the normal-Republican faction within Trump world, without which it would be totally helpless & adrift in politics & policy.

How would her being from the same state have any bearing on her eligibility?
-
Article 2 states: “The electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves.” basically, both Trumps couldn't win the NY EVs, but they weren't winning NY anyway.

same state stuff is irrelevant. They were never going to carry New York, so being ineligible to use those electoral votes didn't matter

Beta male Pence has served Trump admirably in helping snooker the evangelical community.

This is all correct, but one minor nitpick - residence is easy to get around. Bush/Cheney just had Cheney set up a residence in Wyoming; Ivanka could have “moved” to Mar-a-Lago or whatever.
