I'm fine with mandating coverage, but not with requiring insurers to ignore pre-existing conditions in the premiums they charge. Some people with pre-existing conditions can afford to pay higher premiums. Government subsidies can focus narrowly on those who can't. https://twitter.com/EWErickson/status/1309478462353297408 …

So in this scenario, the middle class family who has a child w/cystic fibrosis should live paycheck to paycheck paying for exorbitant healthcare—barely affordable, but they scrape by—instead of putting that money into growing their small business, to avoid government dependency?

Perhaps you’ve never had a pre-existing condition. I do. Either the carrier won’t cover it or they charge an excessive rate for the condition even though you don’t have any current complications or problems from the condition.

pre-existing conditions apply when the person goes without insurance. HIPAA addressed a lot of the problems, but having coverage allows you to switch plans. Otherwise, a person can decide to not pay premiums until just before they know they'll need treatment, and then get a plan

Why should that be it’s starting point? Why not make the starting point be that we want to strive for healthcare outcomes as good as or better than any other nation of our wealth & resources, & see what it takes to get there?

This thread is the GOP healthcare issue in a nutshell. Most Rs think uninsured aren’t their problem. Since they can’t say it openly, they focused on blocking the Dems while offering no real alternative. Once ACA was passed, the GOP was screwed.

Government social programs, be it Food stamps, housing, health care, should always be a last resort, government can sustain you-you can’t thrive on a government program
