The Senate wasn't in session. He submitted a nomination the day after they returned, & he was confirmed the same day. Also, Ike in mid-October did a recess appointment because, again, the Senate wasn't in session https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/supreme-court-why-no-justice-has-beenconfirmed-in-the-fall-of-a-presidential-election-year/ …https://twitter.com/BillKristol/status/1308508500591607808 …

I think Lincoln is the only President to have a SC vacancy closer to the election than now. Lincoln was replacing Taney—a crucially important appointment. He made a public, principled decision to wait until after the election to allow the newly elected President the nomination.

Also, Lincoln had his own intra-party political reasons to dangle the nomination & not announce a choice before the electionhttps://www.lincolncottage.org/lincolns-election-year-supreme-court-nominee/ …

Yes, but when Lincoln submitted the nomination he had already been reelected.

Be honest, principle and precedence are not in play here, it’s all about Power. The GOP, faced with a dire future, might use that power thinking it’s their only political option. I’m here for the Dems to respond in kind when they take the Presidency and the Senate.

Both Republicans and Democrats act in their interests. Just like all previous nominations. Hyperpartisans like yourself dress it up with words like "dire". 🙄
