Why? The entire exercise is completely illegitimate following the election. And if it begins a mere six weeks before the election, *its also* illegitimate.. Once we’re talking about the passing of a justice on 9/18 in a presidential election yr, there’s nothing to do but wait.

It’s obviously bad faith to hold a vote prior to the election. Now if Trump and the senate Rs *both* win, you can argue that it’s appropriate, although gratuitous to happen so quickly. But if *either* lose, then it’s a legitimation crisis.
