“Trolling as federal policy”is fun and exciting I’m sure but in a world in which the federal government has large and sweeping powers it is less fun and exciting

If the DOJ just launched this without cause you'd be 100% absolutely correct. They are launching a civil rights investigation because of Princeton's own comments. You don't have to like it, but it's their own fault.

Their statement racism is “embedded” in Princeton is either a serious one or its not.

It is an entirely serious statement, which this administration is not taking seriously. Of course the university that helped produce a biography of Woodrow Wilson that his own family would find a touch hagiographic has a problem here, as do most institutions!

if the administration were taking the statement seriously, would that preclude an investigation? would a serious response be distinguished by different actions, or just different messaging/tone?

There are a few things here: what is “an investigation” here, why is the government getting involved, why is this administration getting involved, why would any administration get involved, ever

It should not be forgotten that Princeton is a major employer. I'd be surprised if plaintiff's attorneys didn't try to use this. Either as an admission that invidious discriminatory intent is "embedded" in princeton or try to force a deposition.
