To pick one example, it would be impossible to sail, opposed, *up* the Mississippi River. The British could go only partway up the Hudson in the 1780s. Only steamboats could do that. Without steaming upriver, most of Grant's & Farragut's victories in the West don't happen.

Turning every city to Atlanta & March to the Sea x10 could have done it. Probably not the will to do so. South just had to hold off til Lincoln was out and the next Pres could have stopped "Lincoln's War"

It would have been fought on about 1/8th of the land mass in 1815.

Wouldn’t the lack of rifled muskets assist the north with their superior numbers?
-
Rifled muskets didn't help much in overall numbers surprisingly. Casualties per volley didn't improve much between Napoleon & Civil War. Something to do with muzzle velocity and how quick the shot drops leaving more shots into the dirt and over their head instead of into ranks.

Interesting thesis. But would the country have been as settled and as far spread without the technology? The territory is to vast for 1815 technology. So if the US was still confined East of the Mississippi but still as heavily populated the Union still has the advantage.

But you are right about tactics. The tactics would have favored the South because Lee was an engineer he would have built a series of forts that would have made it nearly impossible to overcome.
