Yes. By itself, Trump's instinct to avoid setting off panic was fine. The problem was going too far in the other direction. Today's remembrances remind us that leaders can convey grim determination in the face of danger with realism.https://twitter.com/DavidAFrench/status/1304421483238879233 …

Hot take: There's a happy medium between lying and fomenting panic. It's called the truth. https://twitter.com/ddale8/status/1304146028279586821 …

Come on, Dan! Stop pretending some noble motive by Trump. He's incapable of it. He was downplaying a virus that jeopardized an economy he claimed was the best feature of his presidency in an election year.

My opinion remains that Trump had no clue what he was even saying. The WHO didn't even confirm that the virus was airborne until July. How did Trump know this in *February*? He's a loud mouth who loves talking. And boy does he deserve the trouble his big mouth gets him in.

That wasn't his instinct though. His instinct is always to manage threats to his image, which is why he tried to cover it up in this instance, where in other instances he would foment panic. It's all based on his personal benefit.

But truth alone wouldn't cut it. I keep thinking if Trump had been truthful, he would have had to work hard. Minimize the problem, minimize the work.

Trump only works in the extremes. Nothing is a problem but we can deal with it. It must be the absolute worst thing that ever happened. Until the next thing.

Instinct to avoid panic? You’re giving him way too much credit. His instinct was this is bad for his re-election chances and he hoped and probably believed it would just go away because he’s a lucky guy.
