Something is tugging at the outer limits of my memory: Did we have a fight in 1996 about Bill Clinton releasing his medical records, or am I inventing this? If not, what were the contours? Was it unusual for an incumbent POTUS not to do this? I honestly can't remember.

Yeah, I remember a fair amount of conspiracy theorizing for sure. I just couldn't remember how much was conspiracy theorist and how much of it was legit demands.

There were rumors he had a hole in his nose from coke use. There was a fire in Arkansas that destroyed a lot of his medical history. I think that was the source of the more conspiratorial talk.

According to the article I drudged up, the STD question wasn't totally non-mainstreamy. A White House reporter actually asked the press secretary if Clinton had any STDs, which got a "how dare you ask that question" response instead of a direct answer, at least at first.
