The constant challenge with Donald Trump is to remain aware of his manifest personal flaws, and avoid sliding into denial or amnesia - but not constantly obsess over telling people things everybody already knows about him.

Yes, Trump is a bad person unsuited to the presidency. Yes, that matters. No, it's not the only thing that matters.

The character of the chief executive is important. But to say it is the only thing that matters is to say that all public policies are identical. That is nonsense. https://twitter.com/trogdor8768/status/1303026335518994434 …

Yes, I always try to remind people: you cannot avert your eyes from who Trump is or what Ds are. You vote Trump, you accept an unfit man. Vote Biden, you choose policies & theories of governance that permanently damage the country & its institutions.https://twitter.com/Patterico/status/1303020237223149571 …

PattericoVerified account @PattericoI think a lot of people do the opposite; they ignore his atrocities because hey, what else do you expect from this guy? It perpetrates a numbness to statements and events people should not be numb to. (Example: "He encouraged people to vote twice? Oh, well, no surprise there...") https://twitter.com/baseballcrank/status/1303017784201351170 …21 replies 5 retweets 45 likesShow this thread -

Why is one "accept" and the other "choose"? And what are the consequences to the country and its institutions of having an unfit man there?

I've always said: some vote Trump due to policy with their eyes wide open about his personal failings and what that means to the country. OK, so why can't someone vote Biden due to character, with their eyes wide open to his policy? Are Trump voters to blame for all he does?

Well, you're also then casting a character-based vote for a man of poor character, with decades as a chronic fabulist. Either way, you own both. And the Democrats represent a systemic threat to the American way that runs way deeper in their party than just the man at the top.

So is your view that a voter who votes for person x is responsible for every bad foreseeable action y that person x takes, even if he votes for person x due to unrelated reason z? I'm trying to discern the neutral principle here.

Yes. I mean, you don't choose each bad thing, but you accept that one package is better - or less bad - than the alternative, and make that choice knowing it.

Well, again: if you're out to shame someone like me contemplating a Biden vote by saying "[Bad Dem policy x"] will be your fault!" then I can blame any Trump voter for anything bad Trump does? "You voted Trump because you *wanted* a President who disparages wounded soldiers!"
