I find it amazing that he does not see Romney losing to Obama as a "humiliating defeat." Obama was ripe for defeat; Romney showed little desire to win. The cleansing fire the conservative movement could use is Trump. Trump exposed the grifters of Conservative Inc.

The problem is your premise is wrong. I'm trying to think of a humiliating defeat a political party suffered that "purified" the party and led to real and lasting change.

So far I can't think of one. Maybe Hoover in 1932. Perhaps you can give a recent example of a humiliating defeat that purified and transformed a political party in the way you're thinking of?
