Few things are more central to responsible journalism than verifying things before believing them. Yet, anonymous reports demand that the reader apply a standard of blind faith that a good journalist would never apply themselves.

If Donald Trump says "an anonymous person told me this," would you believe him? Only if you trust him personally. So, why would we apply a different standard to Jeffrey Goldberg, or any other journalist?

How is this informative? Did anyone think journalists would publish information from people they have no knowledge of their identity or trustworthiness?
