We don't think of Tennessee as having even been one of the nation's largest states, but in 1850, it was only one of five states with a million people. (This is not reflected in the Electoral College due to the 3/5 rule, as a fifth of the population were slaves).

One of the aspects of American history that I think is overlooked is that the country actually failed to fully populate for the size of the territory and the population it could support. Americans of 1850 would have been surprised that there were only 300 million of them in 2020.
