This is why, in the main area of law where I practiced (shareholder class actions), the law provides that you put less weight on the credibility of any allegation in a complaint that is sourced to a "confidential witness." Court can't assess the witness' credibility.

What if the story's *partly* true, but exaggerated or distorted through the lens of the writer or hearsay thru a game of telephone of sources? The reader is given no basis on which to assess that. "Trust us, were journalists" assumes none of us have seen these things fail before.
