Well, almost nobody. I find the story plausible, but not reliably sourced. I'd be much more apt to believe it if someone with honor put their name to it.https://twitter.com/asymmetricinfo/status/1301860841877319681 …

COUNTERPOINT: No one who doesn't already believe it would believe it simply because they went on the record; the people who are saying ANONYMOUS SOURCES right now would just shift to DISGRUNTLED EX-STAFFERS. https://twitter.com/kathrynw5/status/1301715827553521664 …

And yes: if you're a military man who served under Trump, saw this behavior, are now out of office, & think it important for people to know before choosing the next Commander-in-Chief, it's dishonorable to do it anonymously. This just underlines that.https://twitter.com/danielchaitin7/status/1301880528480673793 …

Anonymous "sources" sometimes just don't exist, but the larger problem is that you can't judge a witness' credibility - how directly do they know this, what context did they leave out, what is their track record, what axe they have to grind - if you don't even know who they are.

This is why, in the main area of law where I practiced (shareholder class actions), the law provides that you put less weight on the credibility of any allegation in a complaint that is sourced to a "confidential witness." Court can't assess the witness' credibility.

What if the story's *partly* true, but exaggerated or distorted through the lens of the writer or hearsay thru a game of telephone of sources? The reader is given no basis on which to assess that. "Trust us, were journalists" assumes none of us have seen these things fail before.

Here's my thing: if it is found to be false, will people that do believe it just say "well it sounds like something he should do and that's telling enough"? I honestly believe the answer is yes. So, if peddling in "close enough" is okay with some then there isn't any point.

To be fair, what happened to Alexander Vindman makes honorable people going on the record unlikely.

Yes, the retired four stars, eg, Kelly, lack courage and honor. But the odds of this being untrue are vanishingly small precisely because we already know Trump has said things like this *in public.* So maybe it doesn’t tell us anything new, but that is a different point.
